Update your password while working remotely

Overview/Introduction

This guide is to show people how to change their passwords while working remotely. The steps are different depending on whether you are using LogMeIn, a personal computer, or a museum laptop.

Details

Reset password from LogMeIn and SLAM Remote Access

These two options provide a relatively easy way of updating your password. If you are signed into your Museum machine with LogMeIn, you can update your password normally from your computer by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete and choosing the ‘Change a password’ option. The steps are the same for using a SLAM laptop over SLAM Remote Access. As a reminder:

  • The password must be at least 8 characters long
  • The characters must fall into at least 3 of these 4 groups
    • Lower case letters
    • Upper case letters
    • Numbers
    • Symbols
  • The password cannot contain your Username or Name
  • It cannot be one of the last 2 passwords that you have used.

Reset Password from Personal Device

This process is a bit longer and outlined in the below steps. Please be mindful that if you reset your password this way, there will be a 20 minute delay before your password will be updated in the Museum’s directory. That is how long it takes for Microsoft’s cloud directory to sync back up with the Museum’s internal directory. That means if you use these steps, you will be immediately able to log into https://portal.office.com or Dayforce, but you will have to wait before logging into your Museum computer.

1. In your browser, navigate to https://portal.office.com/

2. On the first page, you will see the Museum’s building after typing in your username @ slam.org.

  • The text field will say ‘Email, Phone, or Skype’, however you want to type in your username followed by @slam.org. For example, Larry David would be ‘LDavid@slam.org’ or possibly ‘Larry@slam.org’ or ‘David@slam.org’ if your account is older. If you are unsure about your username, please contact IT. Almost all accounts made after 2012 have the ‘LDavid’ format.
  • See screen shot below

3. Press Next:

  • If you do not know your password, follow a, b, c, etc. steps.
  • If you do know your password and need to change it, continue onto step 4.

a) If you do not know your account, press ‘Forgot my password’
b) On the next screen, you will re-enter your username@slam.org and fill out the captcha so that the system knows you are a real person. (see screen shot below)

c) Choose a security option and fill out the required information

d) In this example, I choose text message and entered in the code

e) Perform 2nd authentication step
f) After the 2nd verification step, you can choose a new password

4. Once logged into https://portal.office.com , choose your initials in the top right, followed by ‘My Account’

5. From the account settings, choose ‘Security & Privacy’ followed by ‘Password’

6. Type in your old password once more, followed by the new password twice to confirm. Press submit to finalize the password change. Remember- This method will take about 20 minutes to sync the password down to any computers inside of the Museum.
